5 out of 5 stars The top how-to guide out there.   April 2, 2004

Again, I've read all these reviews and suchwise. And I read that last reviewers review, and I think it is totally unfair for that person to give this book 1 star. Honestly, they must have it in for this author or something. How can you call this book NOT a step-by-step guide? The whole first section walks the user through building a database system. Later, there are even more step by step sections on building relational databases. Even later, there are more step by step sections.

Honestly, this book is the best combination of encyclopedic reference, step-by-step, beginner to advanced guide out there. One star? Bla! Let the other REAL reviews speak for themselves. Read the review on filemakerreview.com also for a huge long in depth positive review. I think it is also posted here on amazon. That one was written by a FMP guru. As well, there are other big names in FileMaker that have vouched for this book publicly. So don't believe that last review as it is a bunch of hooey.

Last, you'd have to be a total moron to expect the convert files written for FileMaker 6 ERROR FREE to FileMaker 7. Who does that? Someone who is a total amateur obviously. Gosh. Buy this book. It is the best one out there. Check out the contributor list. It is a Who's Who of the FileMaker World. How could it be trash? It isn't.

1 out of 5 stars The Zen and Art of FileMake 6   April 2, 2004

If you are expecting a step-by-step tutorial on building databases with FileMaker, this is not the book for you. Although the author appears to cover every possible subject regarding database development he spends very little time demonstrating to the reader how to build practical database solutions. The examples are difficult to read and even harder to implement. The author often points the reader to pre-built databases on the included CD. Although these examples are nice have it would be better if the author taught the reader how to build such databases. I have also found that it is very inconvenient to convert FileMaker 5 & 6 files to FileMaker 7. I would re-title this book as "The Zen and Art of FileMaker 6" and it should be placed in the philosophy section of your local library. This book is far from a "One-Stop Guide".

5 out of 5 stars Works for FileMaker Pro 7 Also!!!   March 14, 2004

FileMaker Pro 7 product line just came out last week. And I can tell you, there aren't an y books out yet. But I thought...what in the heck. I'll buy the most popular v6 book and see. While some of the new features are not covered, this book is still a treasure trove of concepts and reference/encyclopedia type book on database development and the world of FileMaker in general that it is surely worth having until FileMaker 8 comes out. So buy it with out delay is my advise to you, fellow reader.

5 out of 5 stars The best computer book I've ever seen.   March 14, 2004
I bought this book particularly to help me learn about scripts and functions available in Filemaker Pro v6.

I was stunned!

I have never come across a computer book that is easier to read. I find that with most computer books I need to be looking at the screen at the same time as trying to read them. Chris Kubica has done a fantastic job in writing a book that the reader can easily follow and understand even when they're away from the computer screen.

I've been able to easily design my own customer database after reading the book. I am actively looking for other databases to design because the whole process was so pain-free.

The book also covers pro unlimited, developer, server and mobile. My next project will be to adapt my customer database to a palm pilot format for my staff to use when they're away from the office.

If you need to know about Filemaker Pro 6, buy this book. It's that simple.

5 out of 5 stars That last reviewer was one something   February 11, 2004

To only give this book a one star reviews translates into the fact that you must be on some kind of mind numbing drug on an hourly basis. All this book is is a walk through tutorial, with facts, tables, references and definitions mixed in along the way. In fact, I've heard one of the few criticisms of the book is that it is not like a dictionary in that you can't just quickly flip to a section to get a quick answer (I think this is wrong, too, but beside my point here).

Anyway, there are tutorials on setting up your first database, on building relational databases, setting up layouts, entering data, setting up an ODBC link, hooking up AppleScript, creating all kinds of portal magic and so on.

So that last reviewer was either high or really, really grumpy.
