5 out of 5 stars One Stop Shop   October 18, 2004

I've found your Book of Filemaker 6 an absolute gem in it's overall coverage of the Filemaker family. It's like having all of the Filemaker suite of products in front of you without having to spend a penny. Quite simply that means you will save hundreds of pounds by not buying the wrong product.

As someone with over 7 years experience of previous Filemaker versions the tips and tricks I learned about version 6 have saved me tens if not hundreds of hours.

Combined with an easy to read style and great organisation this book is a fantastic reference book I use again and again. One of the best value for money computer books I've ever bought.

5 out of 5 stars Covers all the bases   August 24, 2004

I've been a FileMaker developer for years, but until this book I never found a really good grimoire for FileMaker development, especially one that address all the permutations within the FileMaker product line.

Looking forward to a FileMaker 7 version.

4 out of 5 stars Good book, a few missing topics   August 15, 2004

This is a very good book on FileMaker Pro 6. However, with the release of FileMaker 7, I would consider this book obsolete. Too many things change in FileMaker 7, that many of the techniques and tricks explained here are either unnecessary, or actually bad.

But if you're stuck using FileMaker 6 (and many projects will remain on FileMaker 6 for years to come), this is a very good way to learn how to best use the product. The examples that come on the CD are also very good, with nice designs that you can easily reuse.

One thing missing from the book, which would have taken it to a "5" rating, is discussion of how to connect your FileMaker application to the web. Just one chapter covering the built-in Web Companion (and the CDML language it uses) seems obligatory, and yet missing.

But web-enabling FileMaker is a large topic, large enough for its own book (Advanced FileMaker Pro 6 Web Development, by Bob Bowers and Steve Lane, a great companion to The Book of FileMaker), so I can't dock it more than a point for skipping past this topic.

5 out of 5 stars Loving The Book of FileMaker   July 28, 2004

If I wasn't already married I would propose to Chris Kubica. Wow! What a book. I have it literally by the side of my bed at night.

I do Filemaker Pro Development for a living and I was actually looking for a book that covered FileMaker Mobile and Unlimited. This was the only book I found that covered both. So I grumbled about the cost and bought the book. Boy, am I ever glad that I shelled out the 59 bucks for this book.

This book has saved me so much time & money with it's many real life examples that come on the CD in the back of the book.

I am eagerly waiting for Chris Kubica to update this book up to Filemaker version 7. And when he does I will happily shell out 59 bucks again.

Thanks Chris!
-Sherry

1 out of 5 stars A Real Disappointment   June 2, 2004

I bought this book because at the time of my order it was the only one still available for version 6.0. I should have taken the clue. The other books were out of stock for a reason. They were good. I'm very suspicious of the other 5 star reviews here, because this book is a real disappointment for me, and I rarely am w/technical books. Difficult to read w/marginal examples. I'm sure this book has use as a backup technical resource, but if you're learning the software and need one book, this AIN'T it. Nolan Hester's Quick Start is just ok, a beginner book by comparison. I would wait for Que's upcoming book on Version 7.0. Que's books are typically excellent, but the Version 5 book is dated at this point, so I didn't buy it (I should have, in hindsight)
